Definition of Miracle in the Bible

In the Bible, a miracle is commonly described as a supernatural act of God that transcends established natural laws. It is a manifestation of divine power designed to confirm the authenticity of the divine message and strengthen the faith of those who witness or experience the miracle. Miracles can take many forms, from miraculous healings to the manipulation of nature.

They not only illustrate the magnitude of divine power, but also point to the central message of the gospel - redemption through Jesus Christ. By understanding the significance of miracles in the Bible, we are challenged to strengthen our faith and trust in the divine providence that continues to operate in our lives today.

Jesus' first miracle

Jesus' first miracle, according to the biblical accounts, took place during a wedding in Cana of Galilee. This miracle is known as the turning of water into wine. The episode is described in the Gospel of John, in chapter 2, verses 1 to 11.

The story goes that Jesus, his mother and his disciples were invited to a wedding. During the celebration, it was noticed that the wine had run out, which was an embarrassing and dishonorable situation for the hosts. Jesus' mother, Mary, approached her son and asked for help. Jesus responded by saying, "Woman, what have I to do with you? My hour has not yet come." (John 2:4, Revised and Updated).

Despite this apparently hesitant initial response, Mary instructs the servants to do as Jesus tells them. He orders them to fill six stone jars with water and then takes some of the water and turns it into wine. The master waiter, on tasting the wine, declares that it is of a higher quality than that served previously.

This miracle at Cana is considered the first sign, according to the terminology used in John's Gospel, indicating Jesus' divinity and establishing his authority to perform extraordinary deeds. This episode symbolizes Jesus' abundant grace and ability to transform seemingly impossible situations, as well as illustrating his concern for people's everyday needs.
